Beat the Heat Without Breaking the Bank: 5 Ways to Save Energy

Though the Pacific Northwest is known for its rainy season, in recent years it is our sizzling summer months that have impacted not only our daily lives but our energy bills.  The good news is there are a number of easy ways to stay cool during the summer and save energy.

  1. Get Smart:  Investing in a smart thermostat like the Carrier Cor Wi-Fi Thermostat can save you an average of 20% on your heating and cooling energy costs.   Features like Ideal Away™ let the thermostat intelligently adapt beyond manual programming for greater efficiency while keeping you comfortable. In addition, monthly energy reports help you understand your system’s performance, allowing you to modify settings to maximize savings.
  2. Change Your Filter:  Depending on the system you have, we recommend changing your filter every 3-6 months (for 1” filters we recommend checking monthly).  Dirt and debris can build up and restrict airflow so changing your filter ensures maximum efficiency while extending the life of your system.
  3. Close the Blinds:  Sunlight that comes in through your windows can bring in a lot of heating into your home, causing your air conditioner to work harder. Close your blinds and curtains during the warmest parts of the day to keep your home cooler.
  4. Decrease Daytime Appliance Use:  Since electronics generate a lot of heat, try running your washing machine and dishwasher at night rather than during the day.  To further keep the heat down, BBQ rather than using the oven and unplug other appliances when not in use.
  5. Keep the Warm Air Out:  Check your window seals and door gaps for any areas that may be letting the warm air in.  Seal any gaps with calking and invest in weather stripping for your doors.  This will also help to keep the warm air in during the cooler months.
