Boilers 101: Making History

Train drawing in black and gray

When you think of boilers you may envision scenes of period movies like Titanic: large steam systems fueled by wood or coal, primarily used in old trains and ships. In fact, fire-tube boilers like the “Scotch Marine” were used on the actual Titanic and helped to power the U.S. during the Industrial Revolution. Later on, the cast iron boiler was introduced, changing the course of history for boilers. For the first time, a boiler could be made strong enough for low-pressure steam, which was needed to be sufficient in heating buildings.

Today’s Boilers

Although the boiler has come a long way in technology, the basic components remain consistent, which is why it is still one of the most reliable systems in the heating industry. Whether used to heat hot water or heat your home, the advantages of a boiler system are truly unmatched.

Reap the Benefits:

  • Cleaner Functionality: Because the system works by radiating heat rather than pushing new air into space (that could contain dust and other particulates), it is a much cleaner way of heating your home.
  • Balanced Heat: Water retains heat much more than air. Even when the system shuts off, the heat lasts, giving you even heat distribution throughout your home.
  • Reduced Noise: Since the system isn’t circulating air through a duct system and functions primarily within the boiler, it is nearly silent.
  • High Efficiency: A boiler recycles the same water, using much less energy. It is also a sealed system, which means you don’t have to worry about draft leaks or uneven pressure differentials like with a forced air system.
